چکیده

8 Abstract Four meroplanktonic scyphomedusae, 9 Aurelia aurita, Chrysaora hysoscella, Cotylorhiza 10 tuberculata and Rhizostoma pulmo, and the holo11 planktonic, non-resident Pelagia noctiluca have 12 formed blooms in the northern Adriatic over the last 13 200 years. Published data about the historical occur14 rences of these five scyphomedusae, in combination 15 with our data, were used to analyse their long-term 16 fluctuations in this northernmost part of the Mediter17 ranean Sea. Analysis of the most recent blooms was 18 complemented with environmental descriptors (tem19 perature, salinity, pH, chlorophyll a, zooplankton dry 20 weight and major river discharges). Continuous 21 wavelet transformation analysis of the historical time 22 series of scyphomedusae occurrences and environ23 mental parameters revealed that the five species have 24 been present regularly in the northern Adriatic over 25 the last 200 years, with two major periods of jellyfish 26 proliferations. The first period in the years around 27 1910 was characterised by significant periodicity of 28 8–12 years for each species, while the second period 29 from the 1960s onwards was characterised by a 30 shortened significant periodicity of less than 8 years. 31 Pelagia noctiluca fluctuations were analysed in 32 greater detail for the last four decades, revealing 33 significant periodicities of *10 years, 2.5 years, 34 8–14 months, and 8 months. The significantly marked 35 periodicity of about 10 years in the P. noctiluca 36 spectrum indicates a pattern similar to that observed in 37 the western Mediterranean. Wavelet analysis showed 38 that the periodicity of occurrence of five jellyfish 39 species has shortened in recent decades and the 40 recurrence of blooms has increased, particularly for 41 A. aurita and R. pulmo.

Multi-year study of the effects of Ulva sp. blooms on eelgrass Zostera marina

Macroalgal blooms have contributed to declines in foundation species such as corals and seagrasses across the globe. Most studies of macroalgal bloom effects on seagrasses focus on the short-term effects, and have been conducted in locations that already begun the shift to macroalgal dominance, usually due to eutrophication. Our goal was to determine the degree to which the timing and magnitude...

A model for seasonal phytoplankton blooms.

We analyse a generic bottom-up nutrient phytoplankton model to help understand the dynamics of seasonally recurring algae blooms. The deterministic model displays a wide spectrum of dynamical behaviours, from simple cyclical blooms which trigger annually, to irregular chaotic blooms in which both the time between outbreaks and their magnitudes are erratic. Unusually, despite the persistent seas...

Dynamic characterization and predictability analysis of wind speed and wind power time series in Spain wind farm

The renewable energy resources such as wind power have recently attracted more researchers’ attention. It is mainly due to the aggressive energy consumption, high pollution and cost of fossil fuels. In this era, the future fluctuations of these time series should be predicted to increase the reliability of the power network. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics and short-term predictabili...

Some New Methods for Prediction of Time Series by Wavelets

Extended Abstract. Forecasting is one of the most important purposes of time series analysis. For many years, classical methods were used for this aim. But these methods do not give good performance results for real time series due to non-linearity and non-stationarity of these data sets. On one hand, most of real world time series data display a time-varying second order structure. On th...

Wavelet analysis of GRACE K-band range rate measurements related to Urmia Basin

Space-borne gravity data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), as well as some other in situ and remotely sensed satellite data have been used to determine water storage changes in Lake Urmia Basin (Iran). As usual, the GRACE products are derived from precise inter-satellite range rate measurements converted to different formats such as spherical harmonic coefficients and equiva...
